SVG CSS TO PNG

Why are SVG styles missing in the PNG?

Make the SVG self-contained before conversion. Styles can disappear when artwork depends on its surrounding webpage, an external stylesheet, an undefined CSS variable, currentColor, a media query, or an interaction state that is not present when the standalone SVG is rendered.

FAST DIAGNOSIS

Find where the missing style is defined

PNG symptomWhat to inspectFirst controlled test
Artwork turns blackA fill or stroke may rely on an external stylesheet, CSS variable, or currentColor.Set explicit fill, stroke, and color values inside the SVG.
A class-based theme disappearsThe SVG may reference CSS from the surrounding webpage.Copy only required rules into a <style> element in the SVG.
A variable becomes invalidA property such as var(--brand) may have no standalone definition.Add a fallback or define the variable on the root SVG.
Hover or dark-mode styling is missingA PNG is one static output without the original page state.Choose the intended state and write those values directly into an export copy.
One rule unexpectedly winsAttributes, inline styles, selectors, and inheritance have different cascade positions.Inspect one element and remove competing declarations temporarily.

Make the SVG standalone. If it only looks correct inside one webpage, it does not yet contain all styling required for predictable conversion.

STYLE SOURCES

Audit every place that can supply paint and layout

Presentation attributes

Attributes such as fill, stroke, and font-size are visible in markup and participate in styling.

Inline style

A style declaration on an element can override broader rules.

Embedded stylesheet

A style block can preserve required classes and IDs inside the SVG.

External webpage CSS

Host-page rules are not a safe dependency for a standalone SVG loaded for conversion.

VARIABLES AND CURRENTCOLOR

Resolve context-dependent values before conversion

ValueDependencyExport-safe move
currentColorThe computed color of an element or ancestor.Set color on the root or replace it with intended paint in an export copy.
var(--name)A custom property in the SVG or inherited environment.Define the property on the root and include a fallback.
Color-scheme media queryThe browser's current light or dark preference.Choose one result explicitly for the PNG.
Pseudo-class stateInteraction such as hover, focus, or active.Apply the desired static-state declarations directly.
FONTS AND LAYOUT

CSS can affect geometry, not only color

Font family, weight, letter spacing, visibility, display, and transforms can change artwork bounds. When a required font or rule is unavailable, line breaks and positions can change even if paint colors are correct.

  1. Check whether the font is installed, embedded, or externally loaded.
  2. Set visibility and display explicitly for export.
  3. Inspect CSS transforms and transform origins.
  4. Convert text to paths only when exact outlines matter more than editable text.
REPEATABLE WORKFLOW

Prepare CSS-styled SVG artwork for PNG export

  1. Open the SVG as a standalone document.
  2. List external stylesheets, variables, currentColor, media queries, and interaction states.
  3. Copy required rules into the SVG or convert them to explicit export values.
  4. Define variables and color on the root.
  5. Remove unused selectors and resolve competing declarations.
  6. Preview fonts, transforms, and hidden elements.
  7. Export and compare the PNG with the standalone preview.
FAQ

SVG CSS to PNG questions

Why did my colored SVG become black?

The source may depend on currentColor, a missing variable, or CSS outside the SVG. Set required values inside the file.

Will webpage CSS apply during conversion?

Do not rely on it. Make the SVG self-contained with embedded rules or explicit attributes.

Why is dark-mode artwork exported in the wrong theme?

A PNG captures one computed state. Choose the intended theme and apply those values directly.

Put every required visual rule inside the SVG.
