SVG TO PNG FOR GOOGLE SHEETS

How do I put an SVG diagram in a Google Sheets cell?

Export the SVG as a PNG, then in Sheets select the target cell and use Insert > Image > Image in cell. Google Sheets does not support SVG as an inserted image. Keep important labels large enough to read at the cell's displayed size; a bigger PNG alone will not enlarge a small cell.

BEFORE EXPORT

Design for the cell, not only the file

First decide whether the image should sit in one cell or float over cells. A compact symbol or short status diagram can fit in a cell. A labeled flowchart usually needs more visible room, so placing it over cells may be easier to read. Google describes both placement options in its image-in-spreadsheet help page.

Before converting, inspect the SVG's viewBox. Large empty margins make the drawing look small after Sheets fits the PNG inside a cell. On a copy of the SVG, tighten unnecessary canvas space while preserving deliberate padding. Avoid tiny labels; use neighboring cells for detailed explanations instead of packing paragraphs into pixels.

Practical test: set the row height and column width you actually intend to use, then judge the image in the sheet. File dimensions and displayed dimensions are different questions.
CONVERT AND PLACE

Move from SVG source to a Sheets cell

  1. Open the converter, select your SVG file or paste complete SVG code, and inspect its preview. Choose a PNG width and keep the aspect ratio.
  2. Convert and download the PNG. Open the downloaded file once to check for missing fonts, blank fills, or unexpected transparent areas.
  3. In Google Sheets on a computer, select the destination cell. Choose Insert, then Image, then the option to put the image in the cell. Select the PNG you downloaded.
  4. Adjust the column and row until the diagram is readable at its real display size. If the content needs more room than one cell provides, use the image-over-cells option instead.

These steps insert an image through the Sheets interface. The converter does not edit your spreadsheet, host the PNG, or generate an IMAGE() formula URL. Google's help page says an in-cell image cannot share that cell with text.

ORIGINAL TEST DIAGRAM

Paste a simple status mark

This SVG has no external fonts or linked images. Paste it into the converter, export a PNG, and compare the downloaded file with its in-cell appearance. The circles and connecting line make missing strokes and excess canvas space easy to spot.

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="240" height="80" viewBox="0 0 240 80">
  <rect width="240" height="80" rx="10" fill="#f1f5f9"/>
  <path d="M64 40h112" stroke="#334155" stroke-width="6"/>
  <circle cx="64" cy="40" r="19" fill="#087f8c"/>
  <circle cx="176" cy="40" r="19" fill="#d64756"/>
  <path d="m55 40 6 6 12-13" fill="none" stroke="#fff" stroke-width="5"/>
</svg>

Try the same PNG in a narrow cell and in a wider cell. If the mark is legible only in the wider cell, solve that layout problem in Sheets; repeatedly increasing export resolution will not create more display space.

FAQ

Google Sheets image questions

Can I insert the SVG directly?

Not as a supported inserted image format. Google's image help lists PNG, JPG, and GIF and explicitly excludes SVG. Convert the file to PNG first.

Should the image go inside or over cells?

Use in-cell placement for a compact mark that belongs to a row. Use over-cells placement when a detailed diagram needs more visible space.

Does a larger PNG make the cell image larger?

Not by itself. The cell controls the visible area. Change row or column dimensions, simplify the source, or place the image over cells if necessary.

Export a PNG, then test it in the sheet.
