Why are SVG use or symbol icons missing in PNG?
Verify the reference, keep the definition inside the same SVG, and give the symbol instance an explicit viewport. A use element can disappear when its ID is missing, its symbol has an unsuitable viewBox, its instance has no usable size, or its paint depends on styles that were not embedded.
Preview and convert your SVGCheck the reference before editing copied artwork
| PNG symptom | What to inspect | First controlled test |
|---|---|---|
| An icon instance is missing | The href or legacy xlink:href may not match an element ID. | Confirm the reference and replace the use element with a simple local shape. |
| Only part of a symbol is visible | The symbol viewBox and instance size may not share the intended aspect ratio. | Give the use instance explicit width and height and inspect the symbol viewBox. |
| Instances have the wrong color | The referenced artwork may inherit currentColor, fill, stroke, or CSS. | Set an explicit color, fill, and stroke on a test instance. |
| An external sprite does not appear | A cross-file reference may be unavailable when the SVG is loaded for conversion. | Copy the required symbol definition into the same SVG document. |
| Moving x and y gives an unexpected result | The referenced element may already contain transforms or its own coordinate system. | Remove transforms and compare one instance at the origin. |
A use element is an instance, not a pasted path. Its result depends on the referenced definition plus styles and dimensions applied at the instance.
Confirm the target ID and keep it in the same SVG
- Find each
<use>element. - Read its
hrefand locate the element with that exact, case-sensitive ID. - Confirm the ID is unique.
- If the reference includes another file, inline the required symbol or group for a self-contained test.
- Check whether nested use elements create another reference layer.
A symbol needs an instance size to become visible
A <symbol> is not drawn by itself. Its viewBox describes internal coordinates, while the use element's width and height define the instance viewport.
Check viewBox
Make sure it encloses the artwork and has non-zero dimensions.
Set instance size
Use explicit width and height when inherited or percentage sizing is ambiguous.
Check aspect ratio
preserveAspectRatio can letterbox, crop, or stretch internal artwork.
Remove transforms
Test at the origin before restoring translate, scale, or rotate.
Test fill, stroke, and currentColor at the instance
| Source pattern | What can happen | Controlled test |
|---|---|---|
fill="currentColor" | The icon uses the computed CSS color. | Set color explicitly on the use element or parent. |
| No fill or stroke in the definition | The instance may inherit paint from its context. | Set explicit paint on one instance. |
| CSS class inside the symbol | The class may depend on a stylesheet that was not embedded. | Move the required rules into the SVG. |
| Inline style on a child path | It can override paint applied to the use element. | Inspect the child before assuming inheritance failed. |
Prepare symbols and use instances for PNG export
- List each use reference and its target ID.
- Inline external definitions into the same SVG.
- Give each symbol a valid viewBox and each instance an explicit size.
- Set one obvious fill, stroke, and color for the diagnostic copy.
- Remove transforms and nested use layers.
- Restore layout and styling one change at a time.
- Preview every instance before exporting.
SVG symbol to PNG questions
Why does the symbol not appear by itself?
A symbol is a reusable definition. Add a use element that references it and provides a visible viewport.
Why is my external sprite missing?
Cross-file references add loading requirements. Inline the needed symbol to make conversion self-contained.
Why did currentColor turn my icon black?
The computed color may be the browser default. Set color explicitly or replace currentColor with the intended paint.
Make every reusable icon self-contained.
